Painful or Stiff Shoulder?
A shoulder ultrasound is often the first line test for shoulder pain and problems.
Ultrasound is good at assessing the various tendons and ligaments of the complex shoulder joint, the muscles, bursa and the sub-joints.
Rotator cuff tears or inflammation are one of the most common shoulder problems and ultrasound is one of the best ways of diagnosing rotator cuff tears or inflammation.
The doctor will use the ultrasound probe with a water-based jelly to examine the shoulder and upper arm. The scan will produce images that the doctor will interpret and use to give a diagnosis. The procedure is not painful.
Due to COVID working practices, you can bring one person to accompany you in the scanning room.
There will also be a qualified chaperone present in the scan room along with the doctor.
Please dress appropriately to allow for easy access to shoulder and arm being examined with ultrasound.
